From April 26, 2024, to January 5, 2025, Palais Galliera will host the exhibition "Fashion on the Move #2". This event is driven by the need for preventive conservation and the desire to showcase new works from the museum's collection. The exhibition will present the history of fashion from the 18th century to the present day, highlighting the theme of the moving body.
In the context of hosting the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Paris in the summer of 2024, Palais Galliera has selected 300 items from its collections to explore the role of special clothing for physical and sports activities, as well as the sociological factors reflected in its development. The exhibition will feature both sportswear and everyday clothes, providing a better understanding of the gradual specialization of sports garments and the arrival of sportswear in ordinary wardrobes.
A separate section is dedicated to sea bathing and swimming, symbolizing the democratization of sports by the late 19th century. It is a great opportunity to explore Palais Galliera's rich collection of swimsuits, beachwear, and accessories. This section highlights the changing relationship between the body and its public exposure, as well as evolving notions of modesty and decency. It also reveals shifts in beauty concepts, particularly regarding tanned skin.
For "Fashion on the Move #2", the museum has received exceptional items on loan from the Musée National du Sport (Nice), Fondation Azzedine Alaïa, Bibliothèque Forney (Paris), Bibliothèque Historique de la Ville de Paris, Musée Carnavalet - Histoire de Paris, Patrimoine de CHANEL, Émile Hermès collection, and Maison Yohji Yamamoto. These guest items provide unique perspectives on the Palais Galliera collections and how they reflect attitudes towards physical exercise and sports through different eras, whether as leisure or competition.
